History of the C178

The SLK-Class debuted at the 1996 Detroit Auto Show as Mercedes-Benz's answer to the affordable roadster market.

Development began in the early 1990s with the goal of creating a compact, affordable Mercedes roadster that could challenge Porsche's Boxster. The innovative Vario retractable hardtop became the defining feature, offering year-round usability while maintaining a sleek coupe profile.

Production commenced in 1996 at the Sindelfingen plant, with immediate success in European and American markets. The SLK quickly became Mercedes-Benz's best-selling model, appealing to younger buyers and professionals seeking accessible luxury.

AMG introduced the high-performance SLK 32 AMG variant in 2001, featuring a supercharged 3.2L V6 that delivered 320 horsepower and established the model as a serious performance contender. The C178 generation remained in production until 2004, when it was replaced by the R171 platform.
